What is Hanguljo?
Hanguljo is an all-in-one app for learning Korean on iPhone and iPad. It takes you from the Hangul alphabet to TOPIK 6: its lessons bring together 6,000+ words with example sentences, 150+ grammar points and the particles, alongside conversations with shadowing and dictation lessons from real Korean videos. Word cards show the Hanja behind Sino-Korean words and the conjugations of verbs and adjectives, you can study a YouTube video with Korean subtitles line by line, and spaced-repetition review brings each word and grammar point back when it is due.
Does Hanguljo cover everything, or will I need other apps too?
Foundation lessons teach Hangul and its pronunciation rules, then six TOPIK levels bring new words in every lesson, grammar points and particles along the way and a short quiz at the end, with conversations and dictation at every level. You can trace each syllable on word cards, study videos you choose, and review every word and grammar point with spaced repetition, while the widgets keep the ones you are learning in view, weakest first. Hanguljo is for iPhone and iPad; there is no Android version and no live tutor.
Is Hanguljo free?
Yes, Hanguljo is free to download on iPhone and iPad. Free users get one new lesson a day, daily reviews, the widgets, the camera scanner, lessons from a pasted video link, the first three conversations and the first two dictation lessons of each level. Premium removes the daily limit and the ads, opens every lesson, and also unlocks Kanjijo and Hanzijo.
Can a complete beginner learn Hangul with Hanguljo?
Yes. The Foundation lessons start from zero: the 19 consonants and 21 vowels of Hangul with stroke order and audio, how syllable blocks are built, and the pronunciation rules of batchim, linking and sound changes. Then the TOPIK 1 lessons begin with everyday words, each shown with its romanization, its Hangul letters and audio.
Does Hanguljo follow the TOPIK levels?
Yes. Its lessons run from TOPIK 1 to TOPIK 6 with 6,000+ words, 150+ grammar explanations and the particles, each followed by a short quiz, and 1,000+ Hanja link higher-level words to their roots. Hanguljo does not include TOPIK mock exams; for exam-format practice, use the official past papers.
Can I practise speaking Korean without a partner?
Yes. Hanguljo has conversations at every level from TOPIK 1 to 6: listen line by line, then say each line into the microphone while speech recognition checks your pronunciation. For your ear, dictation lessons with sentences cut from real Korean videos have you put each sentence back in order.
Can I study Korean from my lock screen?
Yes. Home screen and lock screen widgets show the words you are learning, and a quiz widget on the home screen asks short questions, so a glance at your phone becomes a quick review. The widgets need iOS 17 or later.
What is Hanja and why does Hanguljo teach it?
1,000+ Hanja, the Chinese characters behind Sino-Korean words, appear in Hanguljo. Much of the vocabulary from TOPIK 3 upwards is built from them, so 3,000+ word cards show the Hanja they come from: learn 學 once and 학교 (school), 학생 (student) and 과학 (science) start to fall into place. You never have to write Hanja.
Is Hanguljo available on Android?
Not at the moment. Hanguljo runs on iPhone and iPad with iOS 16 or later. The free tools on hanguljo.com, such as the Hangul quiz and the Korean level test, work in any browser, including on Android phones.
Can I learn Korean from a video I choose myself?
Yes. Paste a link to a YouTube video with Korean subtitles and Hanguljo shows the words and grammar of each line while the video plays. Tap a word to see its meaning, so a video you already enjoy becomes a Korean lesson you can take at your own pace.
Can Hanguljo read Korean text from my camera?
Yes. Scan a photo of a sign, a menu or a page and Hanguljo splits the Korean into words and grammar points, with a short quiz on the text. The recognition runs on your phone, so the image is not uploaded.
